Sharing experience with American Schools

In January 30th, I visited Lenoir elementary and High Schools. Both schools are very organized and they have some tools as smart boards, computer, printer some posters and many other resorses in their classroom.
I was invited by teacher Maria Rios to observe an Spanish class. As a Language teacher it was a nice opportunity to see how they teach foreign language at a high school. There were 34 teenagers for about 15 and 17 years old, they have 90min classes every day. Some strategies are described above:

  •  Warm up task
Teacher set students to free write about University. Using background knowledge, they should tell what they know and  what they want to know about this subject. While they were writing, teacher was answering some questions about vocabulary.

  • Vocabulary review
Mrs Rios was asking students the meaning of some expressions, since they give the correct answer she put the word on their tables. After this activity all desks have a different word on it.

  • Game vocabulary
The teacher set the students to walk around the desks and sit  immediately when the song stopped, so that the last student should read the expression an give it meaning. It was so funny an they seemed liked a lot, even some shy students were playing and dancing.

  • Verb tense chart
The teacher explained the grammar topic using both languages, English and Spanish. A chart of some verb tenses was at the board and she set the students complete the required information, after that everybody helped to correct the mistakes.
